Synopsis

Con la música de fondo opens with a playful warning: «Este libro es un concierto. Dale al play». From there, Ismael Ferrer builds a collection that works as a concept album, divided into ten sections named after formats and listening spaces — radio, vinyl, cassette, CD, MP3, Spotify, concert, festival, shower and vises — a structure that is less a formal conceit than a way of charting time and the emotional stages of a generation. The opening section, «Radio», begins with rupture: a «Nosotros» that breaks without warning, followed by anxiety («Ansiedad», «Exoplaneta») and grief resettled into domestic routine, the solitary toothbrush and the abandoned shampoo bottle standing in for everything that's been lost. As the book moves forward, the focus shifts to fleeting loves and impossible ideals («About a girl», «Maldito duende», «La flaca»), without abandoning the observational humour of poems like «Club de fans de John Boy», where love is built from small domestic details: comfort shows, hand-me-down denim jackets, football allegiances, a favourite soft drink. The collection doesn't shy away from explicit desire: poems such as «Vis a vis», «Golfa» and «Matemática de la carne» describe sex without softening metaphors, in a register that sits comfortably alongside the tenderness of «Jesucristo García», dedicated to a rescue dog, or the gratitude of «Himno Scout», a prose dedication to a scout group that functions as a chosen family. The second half of the book traces a reconstruction: poems like «Piset amb tu», «Rosas» and «Nena» speak of a love that is no longer afraid to commit — mortgages, shared bills, toothbrushes cohabiting again — while «Mayéutica», in clear answer to the poem that opens the book, closes the arc of the initial break-up with a declaration of self-acceptance: «seré un adicto de mí». The collection ends with «Vises», ten numbered aphorisms that condense, in a line or two, the sentimental philosophy of the whole. Throughout, music is never backdrop: each poem speaks to a real song cited as an epigraph — from Extremoduro to Rulo y la Contrabanda, from Love of Lesbian to Niña Polaca — building a playlist of more than seventy artists that serves as the book's emotional spine. The result is a collection as generational as it is confessional, with a preface by Mario de las Sagras, that captures with honesty and humour what it means to grow up, fall apart and find your way back to yourself with music always playing in the background.

«With the Music Playing» (working title) is the second poetry collection by Ismael Ferrer, a Spanish independent bookseller turned author. Structured as a concept album, the book is divided into ten sections named after music formats — radio, vinyl, cassette, CD, MP3, Spotify, concert, festival, shower, and closing aphorisms — each one framed by an epigraph from a real Spanish rock or pop song. Across more than ninety poems, Ferrer traces a complete emotional arc: the shock of a sudden breakup, the anxiety that follows, a string of fleeting loves and idealized figures, and finally a hard-won reconciliation with oneself and a new, unconditional love. The tone is direct and confessional, mixing everyday humor, explicit desire, and unguarded tenderness — from an ode to a rescued street dog to a prose dedication to a childhood scout troop. Following his debut collection built around cinema, «Día del espectador», Ferrer applies the same sensory method to music, creating a book that functions as a shared playlist as much as a poetry collection. With a prologue by Spanish poet Mario de las Sagras and a built-in social media following through the author's own bookstore, «Amigos de Lorca», the book has strong potential for markets with an active confessional-poetry and spoken-word scene, particularly among readers aged 20 to 40 who grew up across the analog-to-streaming music transition. Foreign rights are available; no translations have been contracted to date.

Call me Ismael — that's how Matilda ends. I'm a slaughterhouse writer turned bookseller. An entrepreneur who decided to step out of his comfort zone (or lack thereof) to sell other people's books while, in the meantime, carrying on writing his own among shelves and the smell of new paper. All of this at Amigos de Lorca — a bookshop that my sister Mery and I are turning into a temple of La Mancha letters. My previous book, «Día del espectador», held my cinematic universe. Here, you'll find the music that keeps me company, day after day.
