Synopsis
Ahora serás lo que nunca fuiste is Roberto Zarco's tenth book, a collection of prose poetry and free verse built from around a hundred short, self-contained pieces. It opens with the title poem—a pact of self-affirmation addressed to a second person who has stopped putting herself first—and from there unfolds an emotional arc that follows no linear narrative but an accumulation of moments: the death of the author's father, revisited in several poems throughout the book as a wound that never fully closes but teaches humility; heartbreak and its contemporary rituals, from blocking a phone number to obsessively checking the stories of someone who has already gone; and, running alongside these, a relationship that does work, rendered in moments of explicit but restrained desire and quiet domestic tenderness. The collection also turns on the act of writing itself, with several metapoetic pieces about sleepless nights before the blank page and the redemptive role of poetry in the face of pain. The register moves between the conversational—references to WhatsApp, ChatGPT, Instagram, unread notifications—and more lyrical imagery, with explicit intertextual nods to Irene Vallejo, Jorge Manrique, Mario Benedetti, Eva Illouz and Antonio Vega. The book offers no narrative resolution: each poem is a closed unit, designed to be read in fragments, at the precise moment the reader needs it, like reaching into a personal emergency poetry library for the line that will get you through that particular night.

«Ahora serás lo que nunca fuiste» is the tenth poetry collection by Spanish author Roberto Zarco, a hybrid book of free verse and prose poetry that moves between grief for a lost father, heartbreak, and the slow, deliberate act of learning to love oneself. Written in short, self-contained pieces rarely longer than two hundred words, the collection speaks in a direct, confessional voice addressed to a wounded 'you', anchored in the texture of contemporary digital life: WhatsApp silences, Instagram stories checked obsessively, ChatGPT jokingly consulted about matters of the heart. The book sits at the intersection of Instapoetry's accessibility and a more personal, elegiac register, comparable in tone to Rupi Kaur's confessional brevity but rooted specifically in Spanish emotional vocabulary around 'amor propio' and resilience. Zarco has built a loyal readership over almost two decades and nine previous titles, with a consistent presence at Sant Jordi and readings for Spanish public television (RTVE). This tenth book represents his most personal work to date, triggered by his father's death, and offers foreign publishers a ready-made, highly shareable format: each poem functions as an independent unit, ideal for excerpting on social media and for translation sampling. The collection would suit poetry and wellness-adjacent imprints looking for accessible, emotionally direct verse with a built-in social media afterlife, particularly in markets where Instapoetry and confessional self-help poetry already have proven commercial traction.

Roberto Zarco
Móstoles · 1990
Roberto has made writing his refuge since the age of seventeen. A poet and narrator of the interior life, his work sets out to convey what he himself feels in the act of writing. Over nearly two decades, he has published nine collections of poetry and poetic prose, signed books at Sant Jordi, and read on RTVE, establishing a distinctive voice in the Spanish literary landscape. His profession lies in cloud engineering, but literature has always been his true calling. Each book is a new space where words come alive. This tenth title reaffirms his commitment to writing and to the readers who find in his verse a reflection of their own story.
