Synopsis

In the kingdom of the unicorns, where even the air smells of sugar, one couple manages to out-cute everyone else: the parents of our two narrators. The siblings tell the story themselves, with the particular cringe of those who had a front-row seat. It started back in the dating years, with syrupy pet names that made anyone nearby blush. Things escalated when the pregnancy announcement came as a fireworks display raining pink and blue sweets from the sky. They decorated the nursery as though their babies were going to live inside a fairy tale, stuffed with plush toys and adorable photographs. And when the little ones finally arrived, the fuss reached truly spectacular levels: costume photo shoots on a set that looked lifted straight from a lollipop world, outfits trimmed with bows and pompoms fit for royalty, and ever more ridiculous nicknames delivered — naturally — in public. Mealtimes were no exception: every piece of crockery was heart-shaped, and every dish had an impossible name, from "magic rainbow veggie-weggies" to "mummy's sweet-kissy soup". Each new achievement — a babbled word, a first step, gripping a toy — was met with balloons, emotional speeches and an endless stream of photographs. And then there were the Christmases: a matching pyjama photo for all four of them, year after year, without fail. Amid all the excess, though, there was never a shortage of goodnight kisses, tickle attacks or a big hug when something went wrong. In time, the siblings came to understand that the silly nicknames contained real names, and more than that, they came to see something that would change the way they looked at their parents entirely: that pouring all your love into the people who matter most is not something to be embarrassed about — it is the biggest thing you can do. Because, when you think about it, there are worse things than your children remembering you with a smile.

Selling points

A tender, comedic picture book told from the unexpected point of view of two young unicorn siblings who catalogue, with mounting embarrassment, just how embarrassingly affectionate their parents are. From syrupy nicknames to matching Christmas pajamas and over-the-top birthday speeches, every page builds a hilarious inventory of parental cringe that any child or parent will recognize. The book's structural joke — complaint followed by a punchline — makes it ideal for read-aloud sessions, while its final emotional turn, in which the siblings realize that unashamed love is the best gift of all, gives the story unexpected warmth. Written by advertising-creative-turned-author Pablo Gadea and illustrated by Pupé in a vivid, pop-naive style, this is a highly giftable, read-aloud-friendly picture book for ages 4 to 8, with strong crossover appeal to parents who enjoy laughing at their own affectionate excesses. Comparable in tone and audience to international successes such as "The Gruffalo" and "Guess How Much I Love You," this title offers publishers a fresh, humor-forward angle on the universal theme of family love, with a distinctive fantastical setting (a kingdom of unicorns) that travels easily across markets and languages.

He always loved writing "stories" — so much so that he has spent more than 15 years working in advertising creative. One day, his best campaigns to date (named Lucas and Manuela) inspired him to try writing stories for real. He has since published four: «Andrex el veganosaurio», «Una toalla para Olalla», «Un charco medio lleno» and «La familia más Cuqui del mundo». What will come next?
