Synopsis

There is a moment, in every elite athlete's life, when the spotlight begins to dim. Sometimes it gives warning — an injury that never quite heals, a gradual decline in form; sometimes it arrives without notice, like a phone call to an office that redirects the course of an entire life. Julio García Mera knows both faces of that moment: a two-time world champion and three-time European champion with the Spanish futsal national team, captain of Inter Movistar for fifteen seasons, he experienced first the retirement he chose himself — stepping away from the national side at the very top, after winning two consecutive World Cups — and then the one imposed on him, when his club decided there would be no more place for him on the court.

From that double experience comes Cuando el deporte te abandona, a book that combines reportage with intimate confession. Across its chapters, some twenty of Spanish sport's defining figures speak, for the first time and in their own words, about what their farewell was like. Fernando Hierro describes the vertigo of moving overnight from dressing-room teammate of Iker Casillas to his counterpart across a desk at the Federation. Almudena Cid explains how acting gave back the vulnerability that elite gymnastics never allowed her to show. Kiko Narváez recalls the banner calling for his departure at the very moment the dressing room needed him most. Manel Berdonce, with a hundred stitches distributed across his body, admits that he still dreams every night of climbing into a ring, twenty-five years after hanging up his gloves. And Sergio López-Andújar recounts, with an almost clinical precision, the open-heart surgery he underwent three days before travelling to a World Championship.

But the book does not stop at the emotion of the stories. It is also, by design, a practical toolkit. Manuela Rodríguez Marote, psychologist to the Spanish Paralympic Committee, sets out the three types of retirement and how to support each one. Coach Andrés París proposes the footballer's backpack — a structured exercise in reflecting on lessons learned, challenges faced and emotions carried. Tax lawyer Manuel Alonso Espada answers the questions every athlete should be asking about their tax position. Financial adviser Luis García Álvarez explains why equities tend to be the most appropriate asset class for a fortune that arrives too young. And reputation consultant Sebastián Cebrián lays out how athletes can build, while still competing, the personal brand that will sustain them afterwards.

The result is a choral book, written by someone who has stood on both sides of the dressing-room door: as a player and as a director. A book that makes no promise that retirement will stop hurting, but argues that it can be prepared for, trained for and, in time, turned into the beginning of a life every bit as compelling as the one before. The author's royalties go in full to the ACVADI foundation — a gesture that captures the book's essential spirit: that winning and losing belong to competition, but the will to compete belongs to the individual.

When the Game Leaves You is a choral, deeply human account of the moment every elite athlete eventually faces: the end of the career that defined them. Written by Julio García Mera, a two-time futsal World Champion and former sporting director of the Spanish Football Federation, the book draws on his own double retirement — first by choice, then imposed — to build a collective portrait of retirement across Spanish sport. Twenty athletes speak in their own words: Fernando Hierro, who went from Real Madrid captain to rookie federation executive; gymnast Almudena Cid, who found in acting the vulnerability elite sport never allowed her to show; boxer Manel Berdonce, who still dreams of the ring twenty-five years after his last fight; and futsal goalkeeper Sergio López-Andújar, who underwent open-heart surgery three days before a World Cup. Beyond the testimonies, the book functions as a practical toolkit: sports psychologists, tax lawyers, financial advisors and reputation consultants contribute concrete frameworks that make it as useful as it is moving. Structurally episodic and highly citable, the book lends itself naturally to serialized adaptation and to translation for markets with a strong professional sports culture facing the same under-discussed transition. All author royalties are donated to ACVADI, a foundation supporting people with intellectual disabilities.

Madrid · 1972

Two-time world champion and three-time European champion with the Spanish futsal national team, capped 115 times. A defining figure at Movistar Inter for fifteen seasons, he experienced from the inside what it means to build an entire identity around sport — and what it means to lose it. He holds a degree in Journalism and a master's in Sports Organisations, and has served as both sporting director and general manager of his club. For more than a decade he has been a partner at Lidersport, a company working to make sport more accessible and respected in rural communities. He continues to tell stories about sport and business. Cuando el deporte te abandona was born from having stood on both sides.
