Synopsis

For years, every Thursday afternoon, a WhatsApp group called the Camarote Microrrelatista waited eagerly for Rafa Olivares's weekly entry to Cadena SER's Relatos en Cadena competition. The brief was simple: take a phrase provided by the programme and resolve it in a handful of words. What began as a game of wit among friends became, over time, a genre of its own — one Olivares himself named the Juebreve: a nano-story of between forty and fifty words, precisely the length of a tweet, that had to open with that week's phrase and close with a twist no reader could see coming. Juebreverías brings together two hundred and sixty of those pieces, selected from years of weekly output with the help of three exceptional first readers. Many of them share the same opening line and are presented in pairs, showing how a single prompt can branch into two entirely different stories: one might end with a joke about insufferable brothers-in-law, the other with an uncomfortable observation about old age or euthanasia. Alongside the Juebreves sit sixteen even more compressed pieces — a maximum of one hundred and forty characters each — written for the Cuenta 140 competition in El Cultural, and a closing calligram in which the arrangement of the text on the page becomes the book's final joke. Olivares respects no boundaries in his choice of subject matter: the Bible, fairy tales, History with a capital H, Spanish politics and the most recognisable corners of domestic life all share the same pages, always under the lens of a dark humour that takes aim at death, the Church, old age and the family itself without asking anyone's permission. The prologue by Pablo Núñez conjures its own small mythology — that of the philosopher Ireneo Ripalda, beaten to death with a club in Vinaroz for shouting 'Eureka' — as a way of accounting for a talent that, in his view, is rooted in the tradition of Ramón Gómez de la Serna's greguerías. Between pieces, fifteen photographs of Mediterranean dawns taken by Olivares himself serve as obligatory pauses: breathing spaces designed to prevent, as the author himself warns, indigestion from an overdose of Juebreves. The result is a book built to be read in controlled doses — one that, despite its extreme brevity, leaves an uncomfortable and lasting residue about what makes us laugh and why, precisely, we ought to feel a little guilty for it.

Juebreverías is a collection of 260 ultra-short stories of no more than fifty words each, born from a weekly ritual: every Thursday, retired banker turned writer Rafa Olivares shared his entry to Relatos en Cadena, a long-running flash-fiction contest broadcast by Spain's leading radio network, Cadena SER, with a private WhatsApp group of fellow flash-fiction enthusiasts. What began as a private joke became, over years, a distinctive literary device: the 'Juebreve' (a portmanteau of jueves, Thursday, and breve, brief), often presented in pairs that share the exact same opening line and diverge into two unpredictable, darkly comic endings. The collection also gathers sixteen even shorter pieces, under 140 characters, that won a separate national contest run by cultural supplement El Cultural, plus a closing concrete poem that turns the book's own structure into its final punchline. Fifteen photographs of Mediterranean sunrises, taken by the author himself, punctuate the text as breathing pauses between blocks of jokes about death, religion, politics and family life. Rooted in the Spanish tradition of the greguería (Ramón Gómez de la Serna's aphoristic micro-genre) and openly citing Max Aub, Juebreverías offers international publishers a highly exportable format: content units so short they translate almost frictionlessly, a structure built for social-media excerpting, and a recognisable authorial voice comparable to Fernando Iwasaki or Ana María Shua within the Spanish-language flash-fiction tradition. Its episodic, non-linear structure makes it an ideal candidate for selective translation or serialized rollout on digital and social platforms, while its dark humor travels well across markets with strong traditions of aphoristic or absurdist short fiction.

Retired former savings-bank employee, long-distance runner, writer of short short fiction, and grateful dinner guest with a weakness for grape-variety wines. Enthusiastic and proud grandfather. Also a proud son of Hercules — just to temper all that contentment. He came to short-form fiction once the working hours, schedules and deadlines were behind him. Some of his microstories have been recognised in competitions including Relatos en Cadena (SER), La Microbiblioteca, Wonderland (Radio 4), La Radio en Colectivo (Radio Mislata), Esta Noche Te Cuento, Hotel Montreal, Cuentos del Agua, EACWP, El Cultural, Museu Marítim de Barcelona, Zenda and AMIR. He has contributed to a number of collaborative microfiction anthologies alongside other writers, among them Un Tiempo Breve, Siempre Relatando, Libro de las Estaciones, 101 Crímenes en Valencia, Microrrelatos Abogados, El mundo en cincuenta palabras and Palabras que volaron. Mañana me corto la otra pierna is his first solo publication.
